Classes and Programs for Homeschoolers

This is a list of classes and programs that are specific for homeschoolers in the Lowcountry. There are countless opportunities in our community for learning outside of this list as well. If you know of an organization or own a company that is offering classes for homeschoolers please contact us with this information. These offerings are constantly changing and evolving.

Summerville:

Recess & Results with Marea - located in Summerville and Moncks Corner. This is an outdoor homeschool program that meets on Monday and Tuesday in Summerville and in Moncks Corner on Wednesday. Ages 5-13. Drop in or membership.

Syde Kontrol Martial Arts - located in Knightsville. Offering morning homeschool BJJ and Taekwondo classes Monday-Thursday from 10am-12pm.

Homeschool Program @ The Ponds YMCA - located in Knightsville. 8 week drop off program that includes PE, gardening, animal study, exploring outdoors, animal tracking, storytelling, nature skills, crafts, sensory bins, stem activities, and play. Registration for the entire semester is required. Contact for the program is GenyM@SummervilleYMCA.org.

Chango Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - located in Summerville. Offering homeschool BJJ classes on Mondays and Wednesday from 9-10am.

Public Works Art Center - located in Summerville. Hosts many events and classes including homeschool art classes (classes cost). (free)

Summerville Orchestra Youth Philharmonic - located in Summerville. Youth string orchestra for 6th-10th grades.

Summerville Family YMCA - located in Summerville. Homeschool Gymnastics classes are available throughout the week at 1pm.

Impact Creative Arts Academy - located in Summerville. Impact offers a variety of classes including art, dance, theater, and music classes with classes specifically for homeschoolers.

Vivid Art School - located in the Wescott area of Summerville. Vivid Art School is ran by a homeschool mom and offers themed 4 week class cycles for ages 6-15.

Karen DeLoach Art - located in Summerville. Karen DeLoach is a college art instructor, long time home school mom and teacher, author of three art books and ceramic artist, who loves to draw and paint! She teaches groups and one on one classes. Summer Art Camp available now.

Discipled Youth Academy - located in Summerville. Offering Christ centered homeschool clubs, classes, and events for 4th-12th graders.

Little Palms Play Garden - multiple locations (Summerville, James Island, West Ashley, & Mt. Pleasant). They offer outdoor playdate programs for ages 18 months - 5 years old.

Pencil Path Tutoring - located in Summerville. Offering various tutoring opportunities.

Pepper Jack Pottery - located in Summerville. Offering walk in studio time, field trips, camps, birthday parties, and fun themed events.

Katie’s Krops - located in Summerville. Not only does Katie’s Krops offer amazing volunteer opportunities, even for kids, they also have an outdoor classroom with a variety of classes available. (free/low cost)

Summerville Thunderbolts - located in Summerville. This is a rec cross country team that meets at Gahagan park.

D-Bat of Summerville - offering homeschool group and private lessons multiple times a week.

Bold Academy Ninja and Gymnastics - located in Summerville. Offering homeschool classes for ages 5-12 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 11am.

Arrows- Home School Coaching & Curriculum - located in Summerville. Nancy Cook offers pre-k - 12th grade coaching and curriculum services. She is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist and licensed educator (NY, SC, and DoDEA). The curriculum is individualized to meet your child's interests to ensure engagement and is designed for their skill level. Students with special needs are welcome! Services are delivered in person and/or virtually. The program follows the philosophy of the tenets of classical education and is aligned with Christian values.

Moncks Corner:

Time for Tots at Old Santee Canal Park - located in Moncks Corner. This is an engaging program for ages 2-5. Classes are every other Wednesday at 10am for $5/child. Preregistration is required. For questions contact Cindy Moyer (843-899-5200). (low cost)

Homeschool Days at Old Santee Canal Park - located in Moncks Corner. These homeschool days are for individual homeschoolers (you can book group field trips as well) and usually held once a month on Wednesdays at 10am. Preregistration is required. A Home For School - located in Moncks Corner. This is a half day learning pod that meets 3 days a week as well as STEM classes on Wednesday. They offer classes for pre-k - 6th grade. Mrs. Spann also offers other educational resources on her website, including learning kits and homeschool consultations/lesson planning.

Nurturing Wonders - located in Cane Bay. This is a outdoor-based early childhood education program. They are a one room school house for ages 3-12 years old with multiple days/times offered.

Intensity Co-op - located in Moncks Corner. Intensity Cheer Elite offers various homeschool class opportunities for all ages at times that are convenient to homeschool families.

North Charleston:

House Theatre - located at in North Charleston at Greenridge Church. They offer homeschool programs for stage, choir, dance and script. Programs meet on Mondays and they have programs for almost every age group.

Goose Creek Recreation Center - located in Goose Creek. Play-nastics: Every Monday from 10am-12pm the gymnastics area is open for ages 1-5. Every Wednesday from 10am-12pm the gymnastics area is open for ages 5 and up. Fees: Residents: $5 for 1 child/$3 additional siblings; Non-residents: $7 for 1 child/$5 additional siblings, Cash or Check only.

Holy City Archers - located in N. Charleston. A homeschooling archery team. Sign ups for fall are in October.

Carolina Ice Palace - located in N. Charleston. They offer homeschool ice skating lessons on Fridays.

Homeschool Kids Camp @ Palmetto Clayground - located in N. Charleston. Arts and crafts classes held through out the month. Classes range from $15-30.

R and R Acres - located in Jamestown, SC; also offers classes in North Charleston. On and off farm classes available on a variety of farm and bee keeping topics.

Charleston County Parks - multiple locations. They offer many learning opportunities for all ages. Specifically for homeschoolers they have Homeschool in the Parks, these are offered once or twice a month. Classes typically cost $7-10.

Charleston Jazz Academy - located in North Charleston. The homeschool band meets on Tuesdays and welcomes any level of experience for students 4th - 12th grade.

Grassroots Gymnastics - located in North Charleston. They offer homeschool classes on Thursdays. Kinder (5 yrs old) meets at 10am, beginner and intermediate for ages 6 and up meets at 11am.

Firefly Farmstead & Apothecary - meets at Luminary Chiropractic in Hanahan, SC and virtual. Offers monthly classes for homeschoolers.

Charleston Swim - locations vary. Offering swim instruction from beginner to advanced (2 months to adulthood), with teacher training to support diverse needs, including autism. They offer a Swim Team Prep class for those seeking to improve their skills. Choose a daytime lesson time that best suits your homeschool schedule!

Guitar Center - located in North Charleston. Offering music classes for homeschoolers.

West Ashley:

Gymnastics Academy of Charleston - located in West Ashley. Homeschool class takes place on Monday and Wednesday at 11:15am.

Charleston Rhythmics - located in West Ashley. Rhythmic gymnastic classes with a variety of options including homeschool and adaptive classes.

Classeteria - located in West Ashley at the Calvary Lutheran Church. Educational classes and resources for homeschoolers taught mostly by teachers with some parent-led classes. They offer a variety of classes (including drop off for older students), a lending library, computer lab, and a lunch area. The majority of their classes are geared toward middle and high school students that can be counted as high school credits. They also have a growing elementary group.

Pack Athletics - located in West Ashley. They offer tumbling and cheer skill classes as well as homeschool open gym on Fridays.

The Islands:

Heart Beatz Dance Academy - located in Johns Island. They offer homeschool enrichment camps in seasonal sessions. They have classes that meet on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 9:30-12:30. Their classes are geared toward 4-10 years old.

Palmetto Youth Choir - located on James Island. This is a secular youth choir for ages 6-18 that meets on Monday evenings at the Arts and Cultural Center.

Pluff Mud Farm - located on Wadmalaw Island. This is a fiber farm that offers homeschool art classes and field trips. Check out their page for upcoming classes.

Sea Island Music Studio - located on Johns Island. Sarah teaches online voice, piano, and general music lessons. She primarily teaches individual students but can also teach small group sessions. Sessions are scheduled once a week. Students are ages 5 through adult.

Bit o Gold Equestrian - located in Wadmalaw. Horse farm currently offering Presence of the Horse program for homeschoolers. This unmounted program encourages your child to learn at their pace, with the assistance of one of our instructors and their peers!

High Tide Kayaking - locations vary. Offering homeschool kayaking classes that meet every other Tuesday from 10:00-1:00. Kayaking, conservation, marsh restoration, wilderness first aid and outdoor etiquette, leadership, teamwork, and more.

Pluff Mud Pottery - located on Folly Road. They offer make your own pottery and fun events for kids!

Janellify Art - located at the James Island Arts & Cultural Center. Offers homeschool art classes.

Drama Kids Charleston South - located on Johns Island. Offering homeschool classes for multiple age groups.

Liz Barry Studios - located on James Island. Homeschool clay art classes held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Liz also sells at home clay art kits, available here.

Rural Areas:

Homeschool Club - located at the Holly Hill Library. Meets every other Tuesday at 10am. Come hang out and meet other homeschoolers while playing games. Please RSVP to attend. (free)

Downtown Charleston:

Charleston Gaillard Center - Educational Program shows run from October to April with shows for every age group. Attend as an individual or plan a field trip for a group. These are a must see.

Homeschool Days at the Charleston Museum - located in Downtown Charleston. Classes are offered once a month at 10am. These programs include a special tour or class, an activity, and a chance to go through the Museum. These classes are designed to meet a variety of ages. Included with admission.

Pages and Pluff Mud Reading Group - located in downtown Charleston. This group is for children learning to read or struggling to read. They use All About Reading curriculum and have small class sizes.

Mount Pleasant:

Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network - LMMN comes to you for group field trips. Their field trips include a 45 minute presentation, an in class activity, and reflection.

SCDNR Marine Science Education - Field trips offered at multiple locations for ages K-12. You can also sign up for email updates about programs offered here.

Miloki Flow Jiu Jitsu - located in Mt. Pleasant. Hosts homeschool classes on Wednesdays at 1pm.

Lowcountry Wildcats - This is a homeschool sports program that offers competitive sports teams for basketball, volleyball, soccer, and double dutch. Double Dutch (free) for grades 3rd-12th starts next week at Town Hall Gym, 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant. 1:30-2:30 (with basketball open gym following from 2:30-4:30) Wear comfortable clothes and athletic shoes. Enlightened Learning - located in Mt. Pleasant and the surrounding areas. Small group Math and Science classes for students in 3rd-6th grades, taught by certified and highly qualified teachers. Classes are hands-on, follow SC State standards and can be adapted to your curriculum. Weekly classes are 90 minutes. One-on-one tutoring and reading intervention also offered.

FAME Performing Arts - located in Mt. Pleasant. They offer a homeschool troupe. Their classes are 12 weeks long, seasonal, and meet on Thursdays from 10-3. They offer programs for K-8th grades.

Beach Cowboy Fitness - located in Mt. Pleasant. Beach Cowboy Fitness is a private fitness studio that specializes in gym classes for homeschooled and special needs students in grades k-5.

Young Chefs Academy - located in Mt. Pleasant. Offering a variety of cooking classes for families and children, including a 12 week homeschool class this fall.

Code Ninjas - located in Mt. Pleasant. Offering homeschool discounts and coding classes in a fun environment made just for kids!

Growing Minds Educational Farm - Located in Mt. Pleasant. They offer a variety of classes and opportunities to learn about life on the farm from homeschool classes to mommy and me classes and even goat playdates.

Science Everywhere Adventures - located in Mt. Pleasant. This is a 14-week hands-on science program for 5-10 year olds that runs from August-November and January-April. Classes take place on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. 

East Cooper Arts Academy - located in Mt. Pleasant. They offer multiple homeschool classes including choir, musical theater, band, Kindermusik, ballet, and drama.

Houzn Jiu Jitsu Academy - located in Mount Pleasant. They offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10-11:00 am. Crush Yard - located in Mount Pleasant. Tuesday is Homeschool Open Play from 1-3pm. No registration required. $10/child, paddles & balls included. Wednesday is Homeschool Coached Games from 1-2pm. Registration required. $30/child, paddles & balls included.

Coastal Expeditions - located on Shem Creek. They offer a spring homeschool expedition program. The programs are 10 weeks long and broken up by age groups. Classes start the first week of March.

  • Local Virtual Opportunities:

    Good to know - An In person, group discussion designed to prepare teens and young adults for adulthood. The program will be completed over the course of several weeks or months. Covering skills and information they need to take care of themselves and confidently navigate the adult world.

    Crouching Python EdVentures - virtual (based in Charleston). Online coding classes that include hands-on, project based learning. Bob also has a youtube channel that you can check out here.

    Language on Mission - virtual (based in Charleston). Offers online live Spanish and Mandarin classes for kids ages 3 to 12. Scheduling is very flexible, with multiple times offered. Access to curriculum and printable activities included with registration.

  • Field Trips Groups

    LCHEA (Lowcountry Christian Home Educators Association) - a membership support groups offering field trip opportunities for every age group, spelling bee, testing, prom, father/daughter dance, clubs, STEM Expo, yearbook, graduation and more! $45/year.

    GLOW Events - a membership field trip group. We are a very active social homeschool group with educational events, activities, classes, and parties in the greater Charleston area and sometimes beyond. All events are organized and scheduled by our members. GLOW Events family memberships are $15 per year. In addition, GLOW also offers GLOW Enrichment classes.
