    Homeschool Expeditions at Coastal Expeditions:

Out here, the classroom doesn’t have walls. It has tides. Birdsong. Pluff mud between your toes. We believe children learn best with the sun on their face and a paddle in hand—when they’re given the freedom to get curious, to get messy, to fall in love with the natural world.

With Charleston homeschool students, we’re raising the next generation of stewards, scientists, and saltwater explorers. Our homeschool adventures are grounded in place—shaped by the rhythms of barrier islands, saltwater creeks, and the sounds of migrating birds overhead.

Rooted in South Carolina’s grade-level science standards, each week explores a new theme—like barrier island ecology, tides and wind, water safety, marine biology, and environmental stewardship. For older students, we introduce paddling skills through guided kayak and paddleboard sessions.

Our classroom is the coast. Depending on tides and weather, we launch weekly from our Shem Creek campus to places like Morris Island and Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary. When the weather keeps us indoors, we shift gears—working on hands-on, nature-based projects in our learning lab.

A few of the weekly adventures: Fossil hunting along ancient shorelines; Dip netting and marine species identification; Kayaking and paddle boarding for 4th–8th grades; Make your own field guide; Owl pellet dissection and wildlife biology; Tree cookies and plant anatomy; Water quality and microscopes

At Excel College, we agree with St. Irenaeus' assertion that "the Glory of God is man fully alive." We believe that higher education, done rightly, will teach students to flourish - not just get a job. We believe students who flourish build families that flourish; families that flourish build communities that flourish; and communities that flourish build a world that flourishes.

But what does it mean to flourish, and how does one learn to flourish? Flourishing means being healthy and whole in body, soul, and spirit - not just thriving in the classroom, but in all areas of life. At Excel, students learn to thrive intellectually, spiritually, practically, professionally, and missionally.

Through dozens of years of experience in higher education and multiple iterations, we've learned that Jesus Himself set before us the most effective model of training in flourishing: life on life discipleship. So here, at Excel, discipleship and education come together to foster human flourishing and students learn how to build lives - not just make a living.
